Match Day
Academy Match: Huddersfield Town v Newcastle United
Our match with Huddersfield Town saw us produce our best display of the campaign so far which I suppose is reflected in the result, a 6–0 victory.
You’d have never have guessed from the opening that the score would be what it finished up at, as Town came out of the traps well and put us under real pressure early on. They carved out one or two good chances in the opening quarter of an hour and had they scored you never know they might have been able to kick on, however, once we had opened the scoring – well that was the end of it.
Jeff (Henderson) opened the scoring on 17 minutes when he headed home from a corner, Brad (Inman) then doubled our advantage with a fantastic solo effort and another individual effort this time from Greg (McDermott) meant we went in to the break three goals to the good!
Despite being three up, at half time we were told to retain our concentration and do the right things. It can sometimes become easy for players to become a little bit complacent and cocky when you’re ahead by so many goals however, if you do that there is always a danger that the opposition can recover and get back in to a game they have no real right to.
Thankfully everyone came out fully in tune with our coaches and we started the second half like it was still 0-0. All of a sudden Sammy (Ameobi) had netted our fourth with a header and I managed to cap a decent display by scoring a penalty.
I’m not sure that I would’ve been allowed to take it if it had been 0-0 but as it was I’d won the penalty with a dribble in to the box and our 4-0 lead meant I got the opportunity to be Spot King for the day. Jeff then grabbed his second of the game which wrapped up a comprehensive victory.
Monday morning saw us hit the books for our College work and it was a good day with everyone still buoyant after Saturday’s victory. With it being half term we were joined by the U-16’s in the afternoon for training and they were again with us come Tuesday morning.
Tuesday’s session was a bit of a tough one but with College on a Wednesday you always have the bonus of knowing that you’ve got a day’s rest to follow.
After College on Wednesday we were all told that we would be getting a couple of days off training with no Academy fixture scheduled for the Saturday! Immediately I was thinking of the relative rest and relaxation of the coming days – happy days!
