Colchester United manager Joe Dunne is happy to go with his young guns as he prepares to stick with Macauley Bonne despite a number of senior players being available again.
The 18-year-old who is a second year apprentice scored the winner against Peterborough United a fortnight ago and doubled his tally with a goal against Sheffield United last weekend – his first start for the U’s.
Jabo Ibehre, Freddie Sears and Gavin Massey are now ready to return to the team but Dunne believes the youngster deserves his place.
“He’s scored two goals in his last three games, so it’s a simple decision,” he said.
“What’s key is that you have to take your opportunity – if you do that, I’m a great believer that you stay there. The addition of the extra players gives us an extra boost. We’ve had a lot of people out but the players we’ve had at our disposal have done terrifically for us to allow us to keep the points tally ticking over.
“They deserve a lot of credit and now the players who are coming back will add to the quality of the squad.”
