Marc Grocott - Stoke City

Another Defeat

Match: Stoke City Vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

After last week’s poor display against Blackburn we were all hoping that we could set things straight today against Wolves who are also situated around us in the table so it was a must win game.

We started off well and we had chances to score on a couple of occasions in the first 10 minutes but none of us could convert them. Throughout the first half we continued to play attacking football and played and kept possession of the ball well. Until around the 35th minute when one of our defenders was again to have judged to have pushed Wolverhampton’s forward in the box whilst he was trying to hold the ball up. I thought this decision was the wrong one and their player went down very easily. I could however also see why the referee had given the penalty because his hands were raised and positioned on the players back. The taker calmly rolled the ball into the back of the net and again we found ourselves one down. We then pressed for the equaliser and came close when an attack down the right hand flank resulted in the ball being cut back to me to have a strike from around 25 yards and it was only a good save from the keeper to stop the scores being drawn level.

Neither side took control of the game up until the second half when we come out after the break looking the sharper of the two teams. Unfortunately for me after about 70 minutes I was on the wrong side of two strong challenges in quick succession which triggered a troublesome hip injury and also gave me a sore dead leg. I couldn’t run it off so I was forced to view the rest of the game from the sidelines with some ice – brilliant. The team continued to go in search of the equaliser but with no joy and it was Wolves who got another goal when our goalkeeper miss judged a long ball which bounced over his head only for an eager Wolverhampton striker to get on the end of it and have an easy tap in to put them in a commanding lead 5 minutes from time. Although disappointed by the scoreline Ady was pleased with the effort that we had put in and also credited us with some good football too.
