Greg Abbott: Beck Can Learn From Garner

Carlisle United Manager Greg Abbott believes Mark Beck can improve by learning from on-loan Watford striker Joe Garner.

Beck who finished his Apprenticeship in the summer has made 12 appearances for the first-team this term, all from the bench, scoring one goal.

And Abbot has encouraged the 18-year-old to watch Garner in a bid to improve his own impact on games.

“I think Mark needs to take a good look at Joe and the way he puts himself about,” Abbott told BBC Radio Cumbria.

“He should realise how much of an impact he could have if he had the same determination and nasty streak as Joe.”

Garner, now in his third stint with Carlisle after extending his stay at Brunton Park until 20 November, has scored seven times for the Cumbrians, including five in the last five matches.

With senior strikers Lee Miller and Danny Cadamarteri unavailable, Abbot will continue to give Beck a chance but wants his forward to show more self belief.

“I was disappointed with Mark and I have told him so because he is a player that has got quite a lot of tools to be a really, really good player at this level,” Abbott added.

“He has come up a little bit short, but he is 18, so the disappointment is that we think he is better than he probably thinks he is himself. “

“He can make a bigger impact than he is making, and really be a thorn in opposition sides.”
