‘Rovers Supports Young Players’ Says Showunmi

Tranmere Rovers forward Enoch Showunmi has called for the Club’s senior professionals to continue to be a positive influence on the Club’s younger players as they look to push up the League One table.

Rovers endured a sticky start to their League campaign and had to wait until their fifth game before registering a win.

Results have slowly improved since then however only recent back to back wins over Plymouth Argyle and Notts County were enough to move them out of the bottom four.

In that difficult patch it would’ve been easy for Rovers younger players to have become demoralised but Showunmi has revealed that the experience of the senior players has been vital to team-spirit.

“It’s up to the senior players to keep it jovial in training sessions and I think the coaching staff try to do that as well. I think the youngsters are building their confidence, we’ve got players like Dale Jennings who is doing fantastic at the minute and hopefully we can keep pushing up the table,” said Showunmi.

A summer signing from Falkirk, the Nigerian front-man was aware of the Club’s tradition of blooding young players before he made the move to Prenton Park and nothing he has seen has made him question that policy.

“We’ve got a small squad and a tight budget so the youngsters do get their chance and it’s up to them to take it with both hands and I think some of the young players who have come in this season and previous seasons have done really well.”

“Aaron (Cresswell) has cemented himself in the team and Dale at 17 years old has cemented himself in the team and is doing really well.”

Showunmi missed Tuesday night’s defeat at the hands of Hartlepool but despite the frustration of not being able to help his team-mates in that game he is thoroughly enjoying his time at Prenton Park, he added:

“Personally its going well the previous couple of season’s have been a bit hit and miss for me so having scored a few goals and started almost every game this season it’s been a good start to my Tranmere career.”
