Northampton Town Manager Says Youth Team Could Be The Answer

Northampton Town Manager Aidy Boothroyd says the clubs youth-team can provide a short-term answer to their injury crisis.

The Cobblers have several first-teamers sidelined by injury.

While Boothroyd expects to make use of loan signings, the most recent being the returning Clarke Carlisle, he is also keen to give youth a chance.

“The youth team lads see Ivan Toney, David Moyo and Lewis Hornby in the team and they know they’ve got an opportunity.”

“We won’t be putting any pressure on them. But there’s going to be a couple of others who’re going to get a crack.”

Sixteen-year-old Toney became the youngest-ever player to feature for the Cobblers first team in the FA Cup first round replay defeat by Bradford.

He then scored four goals in a 5-0 win over York City in the FA Youth Cup the following day, with Moyo also getting on the scoresheet.

And winger Callum Powell may be one of those set to make an appearance for the first team.

“For the short term, there may be some answers in that youth team,” added Boothroyd.

“Circumstances have thrown Lewis Hornby into the fray but he’s responded to it. Every now and again you get one who does go above and beyond and surprises you.”

“I’m a big believer in youth. You don’t want too many kids, but you don’t want ‘Dad’s Army’.”
