Cardiff City starlet Adam Matthews is ready for a three-way contest to be Cardiff City’s first choice right-back.
Second-year Apprentice Matthews has recovered from a groin strain and is keen to go straight back into the Bluebirds team for Sunday’s Championship match against Ipswich Town at home.
However, he will have to battle for the position with Paul Quinn while other first team full-back Kevin McNaughton is due to return to action in the next week after suffering from a hamstring problem.
Matthews, who believes that competition for places can only benefit the Blues in the long term, said:
“There are three players challenging for one position and that’s great for the team.”
“Kevin was unfortunate to suffer a hamstring pull at Barnsley, but it’s not serious and he will be back quickly. Quinny did really well against Barnsley when he went on and the competition is fierce.”
“I’m still surprised at how well this season has gone for me so far. I wasn’t sure if I would start any matches, but I’ve done quite well when I have played and I’m happy with the way it’s going.”
“It would be great if I am selected for Sunday’s match against Ipswich and I really want to play.”
“Every match is important, but these next two against Ipswich and Preston, both at home, are crucial. One point from our last three games isn’t the best and on Sunday we have the chance to earn the win we need and get a run going.”
