Madine Puts Carlisle Second

ASE graduate Gary Madine’s winner helped Carlisle United to a 1-0 win over Notts County on Saturday and put them within touching distance of league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion.

The young forward gave the Cumbrians all three points with a 68th minute strike as Notts County paid the price for some poor finishing.

Former Carlisle striker Karl Hawley was chief culprit blazing over and also heading wastefully wide, while Mike Edwards second-half header also hit a post.

But Madine’s sixth goal of the season saw United record their first home win in two months and give boss Greg Abbott cause for optimism that this could be their year.

“I’m delighted for these players. They’ve gone second in the table and they deserve it because of the way they approach each game.”

“We may not be a match for teams in terms of individual quality at this level but we area match in terms of spirit.”
