The Football League’s Phil Stant recently led a delegation from Wycombe Wanderers, that included all The Chairboys first-team squad, to the Somme as part of football’s annual Remembrance Day commemoration.
While players up and down the land have sported specially commissioned shirts as part of football’s commitment to remember the fallen, One hundred years on from the outbreak of the First World War, Stant a former Soldier and Professional player who now works in the League’s Youth Development department set off for Northern France to act as a guide for the Wanderers players alongside, Andrew Riddoch, the author of, ‘When The Whistle Blows’, a book about the professional footballers who served and fell during the War.
While Wanderers midfielder Matt Bloomfield chronicled the visit in his BBC blog, the club also produced a video of the trip which is narrated by manager Gareth Ainsworth.
