Tranmere Rovers have signed Youth Team goalkeeper Joe Collister on a two-year professional contract.
Joe, from Hoylake, Wirral, has been with the Club since the age of 15 and is in his second year as an Apprentice.
The 17-year old played the full 90 minutes of Tranmere’s home pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Saturday, making a number of fine saves including a late penalty save.
Despite the 2-1 defeat against North End, Tranmere Rovers boss John Barnes was more than happy with his side’s overall performance, particularly the contribution of Collister.
Barnes said:
“I know how good Joe is and he had a fantastic game but he’s 17 years old, to say that we’re looking for him to play the whole season – it may be a little bit soon for him. But at least we know that we’ve got good back-up. And if worst comes to worst – I’ll be quite happy for him to be in there.”
Youth Team Coach Shaun Garnett added:
“Joe showed he is a good goalkeeper against Preston at the weekend. If he works hard and has the right attitude he could have a bright future in the game.”
“It’s fantastic to see another player come through the Centre of Excellence and Youth Team to sign a professional contract.”
