Alex Edge Past The Whites

Crewe Alexandra’s Youth team will now face Bradford City in the 2nd Round of the FA Youth Cup after edging a tense 1st Round tie with Leeds United.

At a rainy Elland Road, Crewe nicked victory thanks to a 14th minute winner from midfielder Chris Rowntree.

Chances were few and far between in the early stages with both sides taking advantage of the slick surface as they tried to impose their passing game on the other.

Leeds United’s Sanchez Payne had the first opportunity of the night on 7 minutes but the winger dragged his effort wide, however. this marked the start of a busy 5 minutes for Crewe ‘keeper Daniel Platt who dealt competently with a number of tricky moments.

Then with their first real attack of the game Crewe took the lead, when a move that included Jason Oswell, Sean Cooke and Ryan Jones ended with Rowntree tapping in the ultimately decisive strike from close range.

Despite Leeds’ attempts to draw level being led by the lively Payne, the Alex back four stood firm to see out the encounter and book another trip to West Yorkshire to face Bradford City.
