Smalley Aims For Reversal Of Fortune

Oldham Athletic forward Deane Smalley hopes his first goal of the season can spark a turn-around of fortunes for the Boundary Park Club.

The young forward who has been sidelined for much of the current campaign, opened his account for the season on Saturday in a 2-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers, a match which saw The Latics record their first win in seven league games.

Strike partner Paul Heffernan also registered his first goal since joining on loan from Doncaster Rovers as The Latics gained a much-needed three points.

“I haven’t been happy with the way I’ve performed,” admitted Smalley.

“Now I’ve scored I can hopefully continue doing so.”

“I was more than happy to get on the scoresheet. I knew it was going in when I hit it and it’s the best I’ve played since coming back from injury.”

“I’m also happy for the lads at the back and in midfield that we got a clean sheet. I think it’s something we deserved for the way we played.”
