Matthews Out Of International Clash

Adam Matthews

Cardiff City defender Adam Matthews is out of Wales’ Under-21 UEFA Championship qualifier with Bosnia-Herzegovina at Wrexham on Saturday.

The 17 year old right-back is nursing a bruised foot and has already undergone a precautionary x-ray on the injury suffered during Cardiff’s 4-0 win at Watford at the weekend.

The Wales Under-17 captain was set to make his U21 debut against group three bottom side Bosnia who are without a point so far.

The youngster hit the headlines last weekend at Vicarage Road when he scored a 50-yard wonder goal for the Bluebirds which revived memories of David Beckham scoring from the halfway line for Manchester United at Selhurst Park more than a decade ago, although Matthews goal owed a little more to fortune and the misjudgement of Hornets keeper Scott Loach.

His withdrawal will come as a blow to Wales boss Brian Flynn whose side have a great chance of qualifying for the 2011 Under-21 finals in Denmark.

Swindon Town midfielder Billy Bodin, son of former Wales full-back Paul, has been called up from Flynn’s stand-by list.
