League Reaffirms 2012 Backing

The Football League has re-confirmed that the 2012-13 season will be delayed until 18th August so it does not clash with the 2012 Olympic Games.

The confirmation comes following press reports that the start of the campaign in England could be postponed to allow for the culmination of the Games which run from July 27th to August 12th.

However, Football League Clubs voted in October 2009 to push the new season back to the middle of August to allow fans to benefit from the first Games on British shores since 1948.

Speaking on the decision in October, The League’s Head of Communications, John Nagle said:

“Football League Clubs have voted overwhelmingly in favour of delaying the start of the 2012-13 season in order to support the London Olympics.”

“This decision has been taken to ensure that police and transport links are not overstretched during such an important event for the county.”
