Championship newcomers Peterborough United have increased their bid for Grimsby Town’s 19-year-old skipper Ryan Bennett
The Mariners rejected Peterborough’s original offer for the 2008 League Two Apprentice of the Year, describing it as ‘derisory’, but Posh Director of Football Barry Fry has confirmed an increased bid has been submitted and they are awaiting an answer.
He told SkySports.com:
“We have upped our original bid and we are now just waiting to get a response to our improved offer. We love to bring in young and hungry players whom are eager to learn and want to improve themselves at this Club, so Bennett does fit the mould in that sense.”
“We are going to try to bring him in, but Grimsby feel they have got an asset in the lad and they don’t want him to go cheap, which is fair.”
“We have now put in a big bid, which isn’t cheap by any means and hopefully we will get our man, but if we don’t then we will just move on to other targets.”
Grimsby Town’s official website this weekend confirmed the Club had received a second and improved offer from Peterborough, but Chairman John Fenty said that he will not respond until after he returns to the country:
“Although we have received a substantially improved offer from Peterborough, we are not in a position to respond until I return from the Football League Conference in Portugal and when we have evaluated further interest being shown by other Clubs.”
“I must reaffirm that the Club has no desire to sell Ryan – although it is pleasing that other Clubs are showing an interest in our players.”
Ryan currently has two years to run on his contract with the Mariners.
