LFE Learner of the Term Runners-up | September – December 2019

Students have received recognition for their excellent academic progress and positive contribution at their club by making the shortlist for LFE’s Learner of the Term for September to December.

Here are the runners-up for the main prize, who have all been awarded a £40 Amazon voucher:

Jack Farrant (Carlisle United Community Trust)

Education Officer Mark Banks told LFE: “Jack has done well this term on and off the pitch. Academically, Jack academically has been producing good content towards the completion of the assignment work for the BTEC Level 3 course, while he has also made great progress in his studies for Functional Skills in English.

“Before Christmas, Jack scored the highest grades for his Functional Skills that his teacher, Laura, has seen from any learner on the programme. Full credit to Jack for juggling education and working a part-time job.”

Ben Clarke (Sheffield United Community Foundation)

Education Tutor Daniel Handisides told LFE: “Ben Clarke has shown an outstanding level of commitment and dedication to the BTEC Sport course within the first term of the academic year.

“Ben has been able to take on-board key feedback within the first few assignments and has now started to create robust and well-researched assignments that would not be out of place at university level, despite only being in the first year of the programme.

“Ben’s primary strength is his ability to think beyond the grading criteria that is often stifling on the BTEC Sport course. Not only is Ben able to utilise prior learning to create well-rounded assignments that show an excellent level of understanding, he is also able to find his own information that is at the required level and assimilate this into his work in a way that further enhances his own understanding and that of the reader.

“Ben’s attendance and punctuality on the course so far are exemplary showing another facet of his dedication to his work, as well as his ability to aid other members of the group in their own understanding of key topics. It has been a pleasure teaching Ben so far and I look forward to watching his progression over the next 18 months.”

Bradley Worsfold (Southend United Community & Educational Trust)

The Southend Education team, which includes Andy Edmunds, John Search, Stuart Avis and Charlie Barlow, told LFE: “Bradley has had a successful term, producing work to an excellent standard having achieved both Merits and Distinctions consistently for Unit 6 and Unit 14 assignments.

“He has managed to complete all his assignments at the college, with tight deadlines, whilst also managing to hold down a part-time job.

“Prior to this term, Bradley had experienced a dip in his motivation for the course, but with the support of his peers and college tutors, he has made an impressive turnaround, showcasing a positive mindset in lessons and for his future ambitions.

“He has completed all assignments and completed application forms for local universities, which is pleasant news. Bradley is hard-working, reliable, intelligent and has come a long way since joining the college in 2018. He is a likeable individual at the college and has also displayed excellent attendance and punctuality.”
