Marc Grocott - Stoke City

End of Season Howler vs Wolves

Match: Stoke City Reserves vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Reserves

I found myself with a start in this Reserve game against Wolves. We were again fielding a young side. Wolves had a fairly well experienced team on show and it was evident with their early dominance and possession but it was us had the first and best chance of the first half. The chance fell at my feet when, after I managed to get control of a flicked on ball and take it past the last defender, I shot the ball wide from all of 15 yards with only the ‘keeper to beat. I felt angry and I felt that I should have at least tested the goalkeeper. It ended all square at half time but soon after the second half had begun we found ourselves 1 down. One of the more experienced players of the Wolves team picked the ball up and let fly with a shot from 40 yards which swerved and powered into the top left hand corner and left our ‘keeper with no chance of getting near it. It was probably the best goal that I have ever seen with my own eyes live.

We drew level after a ball was crossed in from wide. I managed to get my head to the ball and powered it into the corner. I was particularly pleased with this ball as I don’t score many goals with my head. The game looked like it was heading for a draw up until a mis-timed challenge from one of our defenders allowed one of their strikers to go through 1 v 1 with our ‘keeper. Their striker went on to square the ball to his strike partner who easily rolled it into the back of the net. This was a bit disheartening after we had tried so hard and put in a good account for ourselves and also with it being the last game of the season and no one wants to go out on a loss.
